But is now the right time, you ask? Skilled immigrants that have the educational qualifications and work experience to drive economic growth are a crucial part of Canada’s long-term plans. This year alone, Canada is going to welcome 485,000 new permanent residents with a target of half a million new permanent residents next year. Yes! Half a million! With immigration targets this high, now is the best time to live your dreams!

Now, coming to Canada looks different for everyone, with their unique profiles and priorities. When you start researching and planning your journey, you will realize that there are more than hundred pathways to settle in Canada. We will discuss some of the most popular ways for you here.

On a fundamental basis, there are three ways to live in Canada:

  1. Temporary Residence Programs that let you live in Canada for a specific amount of time

    1. Visitor Visa: Also called Temporary Resident Visa, this official document signifies that you meet all requirements for entering Canada. The fees for a visitor visa starts from CAN$ 100. You can stay for upto 6 months in Canada on a visitor visa.

    2. Study Permits: These study permits, costing around CAN$ 150, allows foreign students to enroll at Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) in Canada. You also need to prove that you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.

    3. Supervisa for Parents and Grandparents: This option lets you visit your children or grandchildren for five years at a time. If you need to come back, it also provides multiple entries for a period upto ten years.

    4. Work Permits: These work permits, where costs start from CAN$ 155, let you work temporarily in Canada. You can choose to get an open work permit that lets you work with any employer, except some ineligible ones. Or you can get an employer-specific work permit that has certain conditions like a specific employer, duration, and location of the job. These permits usually require a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).

  2. Permanent Residence Programs that help skilled immigrants settle permanently and contribute to Canada’s economic growth

    1. Express Entry: This is the most popular program for skilled workers and has three main components - Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP), and Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

    2. Family Sponsorships: Once you are here, you can also sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent children to become permanent residents.

    3. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): These programs are run by specific provinces, like Ontario, Alberta, or British Columbia, to attract workers that have the skills, education, and experience to contribute to their economic growth. Just remember that you will have to live and work in the province where you have applied.

    4. Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot: This is a community-driven program to drive economic growth gained from skilled workforce to small communities in the rural provinces and Northern Canada.

    5. Atlantic Immigration Program: This program lets skilled foreign workers and international graduates to work in four provinces of Atlantic Canada - New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador.

    6. Caregivers Pilot Program: With this program, you can apply to work as home child care provider or home support worker, with permanent residence (PR) on arrival in Canada.

    7. Start-up Visa: This program focuses on immigrant entrepreneurs that can build innovative and sustainable businesses that provide jobs for Canadians.

    8. Agri-Food Pilot: This program provides PR opportunities for experienced, non-seasonal workers in specific industries and with specific jobs, like harvesting laborers or supervisors in greenhouses, nursery, or animal production.

  3. Humanitarian and Refugee Programs: Since signing the Status of Refugees of the Geneva Convention in 1951, Canada has provided refugee protection to people fleeing their home countries due to a well-founded fear of persecution due to race, religion, social group, political opinion, gender, sexual orientation, or nationality.
